Secure Browser

(Kiosk Mode)

Both the Windsor and Maine-Endwell districts have access to a secure web browser for Schoology on Chromebooks. This secure browser, or "kiosk mode", is very similar to the secure browser used in state testing. The kiosk mode is activated from the log in screen (i.e. students should not be logged into the chromebook prior to starting kiosk mode). Users can exit the kiosk mode by either holding down the power button to restart the chromebook, or by simultaneously pressing control + shift + L on the keyboard. Both actions will reboot the chromebook to the regular "log in screen". The video below offers a more in depth demonstration of these steps.

Utilizing the kiosk mode on a chromebook will have the student log in to Schoology, and not allow the student to

  • Open new tabs/windows

  • Use apps/extensions

  • Visit any pages/links outside Schoology

The browser was constructed with a bright yellow bar to indicate that the student is using the kiosk mode correctly. In addition, you will notice there is no place to enter a web address (omnibox), and the minimize/maximize/close commands in the upper right hand corner have been removed.

It is an excellent tool for assessment purposes as it allows full function of the site for the purposes on the assessment, however, they provide a more secure environment for both students and teachers.

NOTE: If your task involves links to materials outside of Schoology (ex. website, video, etc), those links will NOT work in this environment. Some materials can be embedded into Schoology to they will work properly in this environment.

Feel free to contact Rick or Emily with any questions.
