Fourth grade is a year of highly visible progress in reading, writing and language arts. By the end of fourth grade language arts, students should be able to:
· Read with a higher level of fluency and expression
· Utilize root words, prefixes, suffixes, and context clues to analyze unfamiliar words
· Apply comprehension strategies to literary and expository texts
· Formulate multiple paragraph pieces that focus on a specific purpose or audience
· Write chronological pieces, pieces focusing on cause and effect and pieces that draw from personal experience
Fourth grade is also a year of visible math skill development. By the end of fourth grade math, students should be able to:
· Add and subtract large numbers with sums up to 1,000,000
· Read and write numbers to the millions
· Know addition and subtraction facts
· Know multiplication facts to 12
· Complete basic multiplication and division problems
· Understand basic fraction and decimal concepts
· Recognize and identify basic geometrical vocabulary and ideas
· Be proficient in data collection and analysis
Here is a list describing some of our fourth grade reading work:
Each Monday or first day of the week students work on Vocabulary and Skill of the week
The STORY is read in class and discussed. Sudents are TO READ THE STORY AT HOME TOO.
Leveled Readers: Students read independently and answer questions in reading notebook.
Details for the essay on the selection test reviewed in class on Thursday or day before the test along with a review of vocabulary and comprehension of the story.
TEST is given on Fridays unless otherwise noted.
Additional Novels read in class and skills are also applied. Two of the English Festival novels are read in class.
Preparation for Western PA English Festival requires reading four selected novels.

Focus on informative/explanatory, argumentative/opinion, and narrative writing
•List Words are tested each Friday.
•Pretest given on Monday.
Spelling pages are assigned and worked on in class or assigned for homework throughout the week
Advanced Spelling Option:
ALTERNATE SPELLING: Students who pass the pretest with 99% minimum choose 10 challenging words that they wish to learn to spell for the week from the children's dictionary in the classroom. Students write the definition of the alternate spelling word in their spelling notebook and study these words for the spelling test.
