Advertising in the 2000s began to revolutionize advertising as we once knew it. The Internet in the 90s, brought on all kinds of possibilities for advertising in the 2000s. While the majority of ad money and effort was still spent on TV, newspapers and radio, online ad spend began increasing as consumers spent more time online.
In the 2000s, due to the rise in the commercial growth of the Internet, our economy saw record-setting growth of "dot-com" companies. A typical "dot-com" company's business model relied on opportunities provided by the internet. These companies tried to grow very fast and advertised aggressively.
The Super Bowl (played in January 2000) featured 14 advertisements from 14 different dot-com companies, each of which paid an average of $2.2 million per spot. These ads amounted to nearly 20 percent of the 61 spots available, and $44 million in advertising. In addition to ads which ran during the game, several companies also purchased pre-game ads, most of which are lesser known. All of the publicly held companies which advertised saw their stocks slump after the game as the dot-com bubble began to rapidly deflate.
Super Bowl advertisements in the 2000s showed that the US buissneses were changing and relying more heavily on the internet. Other advertisments during the early 2000s also started to follow that model.
The amount of dot-com-related ads was so unusual that Super Bowl XXXIV has been widely been referred to as the "Dot-Com Super Bowl". Of these companies, 4 are still active, 5 were bought by other companies, and the remaining 5 are defunct or of unknown status. Some of the companies that are still doing well are Monster.com, WebMD, MicroStrategy and AutoTrader. These four commercials all advertise how the internet will help you get their product. Instead of shopping the traditional way, in person you could now shop easily online which is what advertising in the 2000s was mostly about.
Music - Eliza
Music in the 2000s was dominated by hip hop and other upbeat songs. In this decade, artists like britney Spears, Rihanna, Eminem, Soulja boy, Avril lavigne, My Chemical Romance and Justin Timberlake were dominant. The most common styles of music included pop, pop-rock, pop-punk, indie rock, garage rock, emo, heavy metal, metalcore, post grunge, nu metal, and country.
A new age in fashion was showcased in music videos like fergalicious and pon de replay. This was a revolutionary time because at the same time as fashion and music, technology like laptops, iphones and other interesting new devices were being made available. These were also occasionally showcased in music videos, but not as much as fashion.
This era was dominated by songs that had something to do with love or romance. Feminism and girl power was important because women's rights were becoming more recognized in politics as well.
In "take a bow" by Rihanna, a flip phone was used to convey some of the plot points in the video. This was an artistic choice that showcased both new video styles and new technology. This video really is quite telling of the era because it showed new fashion, technology and social revolutions. These new ways that women could get back cheating men were truly revolutionary, as this would never have been acceptable in the 1960s, or even the 1970s. The fashion showcased in this video (pixie cuts, boyfriend jeans, clear lip gloss) was truly new to the era.
Miss Independent by Ne-Yo
This song was not written by a woman, however because of Ne-Yo's (heterosexual) male perspective, this video showed how being an independent, strong woman who was on top of what she needed to be on top of was becoming more appealing to not only the woman herself but everyone around her. In this video, a woman who " wanted him but didn't need him" was shown as desirable and attractive as opposed to bossy and abrasive. This showed how feminism in the 2000s was fairly attractive.
You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift.
This song is classic for so many reasons. First of all, this music video showcased the hierarchy of nerds and geeky band players and cheerleaders and football players before that stereotype had been played out. This video was a pop-country hybrid which exhibited the sadness felt by those who felt affection towards those who did not feel the same or had a significant other at the time (although at the end the two do end up together). In the 2000s, relationships were a lot less taboo than before, and younger people were becoming more comfortable with them.
Beyoncé - Crazy In Love ft. JAY Z.
A young Beyoncé declares her love for Jay Z, wearing jeans, a tank top, and lip gloss. In this video, a new, shiny car is set on fire. Add a splash of neon and some interesting camera angles and you have an incredibly 2000-esque moment. The mix of pop, r&b, and rap was truly a new and refreshing type of song, and although the lyrics are quite simple, the melody was revolutionary. In addition to this, this song proclaimed the existence of one of the most famous and classic couples in recent history.
Amy Winehouse - Rehab
The neglect shown by Amy Winehouse's father and boyfriend at the time was so blatant in this video, one would think it was intentional. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of a massive downward spiral for the singer. The incurable addiction that she faced was so shocking that looking back, many feel that this was a perfect example of what could happen to young people who hang around the wrong types of people. Drugs such as heroin and cocaine had a lasting impact on the youth of the 90s and 2000s, so the fact that someone in such direct view of the media was being affected by this was truly eye opening.
Tv shows- Olivia
Tv shows were turning into family/friends sitcoms, more drama into the tv shows. And they were starting into pure entertainment no message in them . The 2000's were the new beginning of Tv shows.
For example, we watched Arrested development. It was funny, but was pure entertainment and comedy unlike the shows we watched in the 1930-1990's. And this was obviously a mimic of a real life family. Arrested development was about a crazy family who ran a real estate business. This was the type of show you would get a laugh out of. The show came to netflix, when it was first ran on television.
But at the same time lots a game shows were very popular at the time. Such as Deal or no deal, Wipeout, Bachelor, Fear Factor, Are you smarter than a 5th grader, and Hell's Kitchen. They were really funny, but the most of game shows included of people being constantly hurting. But they were all going for the money win.
Wipeout was a very funny, game show. It was about contestants trying to defeat numerous amounts of obstacles in the shortest amounts of times. But if you miss the jump, leap, you get wiped out into the water. The first episode aired on television on June, 24, 2008 and the final episode was aired on september, 7, 2014. And the winner who defeated the obstacle in the shortest time won a grand prize of $50,000.
Modern Family was a very popular "family" sitcom. It first aired on September, 29, 2009. The show had about 8 seasons so far and the show is still airing on Tv. The family show is way more modern than I love lucy. It's a great tv show to get great laugh out of, but absolutely has no point.
Another popular game show was America's got Talent. This is where people from all over the world compete and show off their talents and skills. Some included singing, magic acts, animal acts, and more. This included a long process and you had to perform your acts multiple times in order to get to the finales. The judges were Simon Cowell, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel. The winner of the show gets $1,000,000.
The show Big Bang Theory began in 2007 and has continued up to this day. It stars Kaley Couco, Jim Parsons, John Galeci, Simon Helberg, Mayim Bialik, Kumal Nayar, and Melissa Rauch. This show is about male and female scientists who are exceptionally smart and make many scientific achievements but present it in a amusing form through comedy. However even though it presents scientific ideas it is too complicated for viewers to understand unless they are also overachieving scientists. Most of the viewers just watch for entertainment as most other comedy shows. This shows is not educational to watch and pointless to watch because it is not useful, as most other shows in the 2000s
News & Politics- Paul
The 2000’s were highlighted by the September 11th attacks in 2001. Four coordinated attacks (on the twin towers, the pentagon, and supposed to be on the white house) by the terrorist group Al Qaeda killed about 3,000 people and injured more than 6000 others. The damages from the attacks totaled up to about 10-13 billion dollars and even more counting the priceless loss of life. The September 11th attacks created fear and tension in the states and worldwide. This fear that sprang from the terrorist attacks led to other conflicts like the war in Afghanistan and the Invasion of Iraq. These conflicts have created consequences (rise of ISIS and refugee crisis) that lead to turmoil that is still going on today.
Another very notable event of the 2000’s was the 2007-08 global financial crisis, the worst financial crisis since The Great Depression in the 1930’s. The reason for the global financial crisis was that many banks took too much of a risk and consumers greed. It started off with banks realizing that there were many poor Americans who were refused loans from other banks because they wouldn’t be able to pay them back. These banks then approached these poor Americans offering loans, giving them a chance at a new house or car without having to pay them up front. This lead to many people owning things they actually couldn’t afford. These loans then were bundled with other more secure loans and were sold to other banks and spread around. The success was short lived as when it came time for the consumers to pay off their loans they couldn’t and began defaulting (fail to pay, back out) on loans. With that, the loans became worthless as the banks weren’t going to get back the money they put in for the loans and it was too late. Some of the world’s largest banks were greatly hurt by the crisis, with some filing for bankruptcy like Lehman Brothers. In order for a crisis like this to never happen again Barack Obama signed the Dodd-Frank Act in 2010. Many people are still recovering from the crisis today.
Technology was advancing very fast in the 2000’s. In 2001, Apple launched the IPod which was very successful with gigabytes of storage capacity to hold thousands of songs. By 2005, USB flash drives started to replace floppy disks because they were much smaller, faster and had much more data memory. In 2007, Apple debuted the IPhone, a revolutionary smartphone with a camera, text messaging, visual voicemail, and many more things. In 2007, Amazon released the first Kindle used for displaying e-books and other digital media. The Kindle was able to download books and other content from Amazon without any monthly fee. Google Street View, a technology used in Google Maps was also released in 2007, providing views from many different positions in many streets around the world. Also many of the world’s top social media platforms were released during this time period. In 2004, Facebook was launched overtaking it’s competitor MySpace in 2008 and evolving into one of the world’s most popular sites to share photos. In 2005, Youtube.com a video sharing site was launched. It quickly became one of the most popular sites on the web because it made video sharing so much easier in a time when there were few easy methods to share videos. In 2006, Twitter.com was launched. This new idea of “tweeting” grew rapidly and within a few years was with the likes of Facebook as a major social network.
Another notable event that happened in the 2000’s includes:
Hurricane Katrina, a category 5 hurricane that was the costliest natural disaster and killed more than 1,200 people
Politics in the 2000’s shattered stereotypes as we had our first black president, Barack Obama, sworn into office into 2009. But for the majority of the 2000’s (2001-2009) George W. Bush served as the 43rd president of the United States (with Bill Clinton as president for a tiny bit in the beginning). Many people hated President Bush and many people loved him. His decision making has still been questioned today and his presidency has been regarded as one of the worst in U.S. history by polls.
Politics in the 2000’s started off very interesting with the 2000 presidential election. The election pitted republican nominee George W. Bush and democratic nominee Al Gore. The 2000 presidential election was the closest election U.S. history with 537 votes separating the two in the Florida, the decisive state. Because of such a small margin of victory there was a machine recount the following day and Gore asked for a recount in 4 different Florida counties. This went as far as the United States Supreme Court before the decision was made. The Supreme Court finally made the decision 5-4 in Bush’s favor and this sealed the victory for republican nominee Bush. This one of the most controversial elections and one of the only where the person who doesn’t become president wins the popular vote.
After his close win against Al Gore in the presidential election, President Bush was put to the test. Less than a year later on the morning of September 11th terror shook the states. Attacks from the terrorist group Al-Qaeda destroyed both twin towers as well as the pentagon. Many people were lost during these attacks and fear was rising. America needed their leader to step up in a time of panic, they needed a unifying force. In the aftermath of 9/11, President Bush announced a “global war on terror” and the invasion of Afghanistan seeking to drive the terrorist group Al Qaeda out of Afghanistan and capture some of the main leaders.
In 2002, President Bush began to shift his attention on Iraq stating that they were posing more danger to the U.S. because of their possession of weapons of mass destruction. President Bush urged the UN to enforce mandates on the disarming of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. In 2003, the U.S. began military invasion in Iraq and more than 20 other countries joined and soon defeated the Iraqi military. President Bush has been heavily criticized on this topic with people suggesting the Bush Administration exaggerated the threat of Iraq and that this conflict could have been avoided.
In 2004, President Bush ran for a second term and won the 2004 presidential election in another close contest against democratic nominee John Kerry. Shortly after getting sworn in for his second term, Hurricane Katrina struck the southeast part of the United States. In a time of crisis and with many dead and homeless, people criticized President Bush’s handling of the situation saying that he didn’t act upon the many warnings of the storm. He later accepted full responsibility in the failure of handling the situation.
By the end of his last term, President Bush was not received great at all. People were angry with the decisions he made and many wanted a change and a change came in the form of Barack Obama.
