SEL 101

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which all young people and adults acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

In short: SEL is the foundation for all learning and encapsulates the social (how we relate to others), emotional (how we feel), and behavioral (how we act) skills that students need to interact with each other, make prosocial choices, maintain relationships, and achieve their goals. We know that if students' core psychological needs are not met, they cannot engage in rigorous instruction.
