In summer of 2024, I applied for and attended a one month long (July 6th - August 2nd) English teaching service activity in Taiwan through the Overseas Community Affairs Council website. I was assigned to YongKang Elementary School in Nantou, Taiwan. Throughout the one month long activity, the first two weeks were spent training on how to create and teach a two week long rubric for the school students. Activities during the two week long training period consisted of skill building seminars taught by members of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), Ministry of Education (MOE), Hakka Affairs Council (HAC), and Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP). The last two weeks were dedicated to teaching the students at the schools we were assigned to. Not only was this experience a way for me to fulfill my service learning requirements, but I was also able to immerse myself in Taiwanese culture by myself. I was in a group with 5 other students at YongKang elementary and we lived in the school classrooms for the entire two weeks. It was also my first time being away from any family members, so I was able to learn how to become more independent. This opportunity was very valuable and I would definitely reccomend it to anyone who has an interest in becoming a teacher or those who want to
Here are some photos I gathered during the activity of the amazing kids and my lovely volunteers!
