OVERALL SERVICE LEARNING REFLECTION
The Latin root of the word “passion” is passior, which means to suffer. Passion cannot grow in a person without experiencing hardships. I believe strong beliefs and core values stem from a person’s journey. Through my sufferings, I have found my personal healing and growth comes when helping others. My volunteering journey started in the fifth grade as a “kindergarten buddy”, and continued into middle school as a Vacation Bible School leader for my local church. I quickly realized that the pain I was feeling from losses of loved ones and other hardships, was lifted by helping others. Continuing into high school, I do as much volunteering as I can, accumulating over 200 hours of community service. Each time I have helped someone new, I have learned from them. Learning how to be courageous, gentle, or curious. Through helping others, I have been shaped by not only my personal experiences but also by those around me. This has made me a better person and increased my social and cultural awareness. I want to continue personal growth in my future career as a nursing major, positively impacting as many lives as possible using the education I will receive.

Because of COVID-19, options for serving the community are very limited however the community is still in need. I helped with the contact-free delivery of food boxes in Portland, from the Sunshine division. The amount of gratitude on the people's faces as I knocked on the door and they saw the food was so heartwarming. It felt so good to know that I was making a positive impact in their lives for the holidays. One lady even sent me a thank you message since we call them when we are on the way.

Due to COVID still being a societal concern, it has been hard for me to find service learning opportunities, however being a member of Club Hope has not only allowed me to directly serve my SRHS community, but it has also been really fun! I have enjoyed making gift bags for students suffering from homelessness and hosting supply drives.
College Tours/ Campus Visits
3/20/22 (just one of the days, did the visits over the course of many days)

SOU, UC Davis, Cal Poly, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, USF, UCSF, St Mary’s, UC Berkeley, SJSU, Stanford, Santa Clara University, ASU, GCU, Oregon State, U of Oregon, U of Colorado Boulder, University of Washington
Over the course of the year, I have visited 21 colleges, in order to help me determine what my post-high school education is going to look like. As I walked around the campus and received guided tours I was able to determine what I liked and did not like about each campus in order to help me narrow my application list from 21 to 7. I believe that this was one of the best investments of my time that I have made into my future because my top university used to be Pepperdine, however after visiting the campus, I strongly disliked Malibu, so I was able to cross Pepperdine off the list. Had I not visited the campus, I would not have been able to do so and I may have been unhappy had I attended that University.

For this task, I helped my softball community at SRHS by cleaning the cages to make them not only more safe for the student-athletes, because they were very messy and a slight safety hazard, as well as making them more functional for the student-athletes. We cleaned the cages out, organized balls, built shoe racks, sanitized and scrubbed all of the equipment, and organized the batting cages. We then spent time painting the interior of the team room in the cages, since they had not been done in 10 or more years.

I went to the College Fair at the University of Portland. At this fair, I was able to talk to representatives from colleges across the country. Some of the college representatives that I met were from my top colleges, and I took this opportunity to ask them about the majors I am interested in and what campus life is like. I think that this is an opportunity to learn about what my post-high school life is going to look like.
Running the JV Softball Senior Night Game

This last year for Southridge Softball we had 4 seniors who were part of the JV softball team. As a gift to them for their hard work and dedication to the program, the varsity team ran the senior night game. We ran the snack shack, ensuring that all of the players had the nutrition and energy that they needed to safely play, as well as the hydration they needed so that every player was safe and healthy for their big senior night game. All of the profits raised at the snack shack were returned to the organization. Additionally, we helped set up the field ensuring that it would be safe to play on by raking and smoothing out the dirt, putting in the bases, filling in holes with Turfx, and removing the tarp. I really enjoyed doing this because I wanted to do something special for the seniors, as well as making sure they had a safe and enjoyable final softball game. This work is sports medicine related because not only was I directly volunteering at a sporting event, but I also performed many tasks that helped the players play safely, such as helping them stretch out if needed or supplying them with ice packs upon a small injury.

Being the 18U team for our organization, we are the “older sisters” for the younger Rebels teams, meaning that we were in charge of hosting and running one of the tournaments for the younger players. For this tournament, over the course of the weekend, I worked as a tournament director's assistant, doing many jobs that helped the players have a fun and safe tournament. We ran the snack shack, ensuring that all of the players had the nutrition and energy that they needed to safely play, as well as the hydration they needed so that every player was safe and healthy for their long tournament in the rain and cold, despite it being June. All of the profits raised at the snack shack were returned to the organization. We also answered questions regarding rules and safety for the coaches of the teams as well as supplying the teams with any necessary medical or sports-related equipment when it was needed. This work is sports medicine related because not only was I directly volunteering at a sporting event, but I also performed many tasks that helped the players play safely in the rare rain and cold for June.

This MedQuest camp is designed to be a career exploration camp for students interested in a healthcare profession but may be unsure of where to start or how to get on the right path for post-high school education. This camp was very interesting. We met virtually for 4-5 hours a day doing live panels from healthcare professionals of many different careers and backgrounds. I really enjoyed hearing what each mentor's favorite aspect of their job was, as well as how they got started in their pathway. This camp was helping me be an IB career pathway student because I was able to inquire further with real professionals in areas that I am interested in as well as being open-minded to new potential areas of interest. I also learned more about the college admissions process which is something I really needed to know more about moving forward into starting my own applications.

I went every other day to my local elementary school for 2 hours to volunteer in the classrooms of the school. I was able to build relationships with the students, helping them establish social skills lost after covid, as well as helping them with their academics.
