Beginning in November 2025, OHSAA member schools approved a rule allowing Ohio student-athletes to earn compensation for their name, image, and likeness (NIL), including payments for appearances, endorsements, social media content, licensing, and other personal branding activities outlined in Bylaw 4-11.
Unlike college athletics, this is not a court decision, but rather a change in the OHSAA Bylaws which includes rules and regulations that need to be followed. The major points are below:
School names, logos, and brands cannot be used in any NIL agreement. Only those associated with the student.
No incentives or merit-based agreement is allowed.
No time on NIL can be spent during school or athletic hours (includes practice, games, meetings, bus rides, etc…).
Products or services cannot be displayed during games, practices, or online.
Coaches, administration, school employees or those tied to the school such as booster organizations cannot be a part of brokering or seeking out NIL opportunities for their students.
It is the student & families responsibility to report NIL agreements using the OHSAA affirmation agreement within 14 days. If not reported, students can be deemed ineligible. This is the student & their families responsibility.
Student & Parent Responsibility
Student-athletes should seek professional advice and make sure they fully understand any contracts they sign. They should prioritize their academic and athletic commitments while treating NIL activities as a business. It’s also important to remain compliant with school and OHSAA regulations and to report all agreements within 14 days of entering into them.
School Responsibility
Our responsibility at Bryan City Schools is to help educate students and families on new local and state regulations.
If you every have questions on an OHSAA Bylaw, please reach out to the athletic department. If we do not know the answer, we can contact OHSAA to get clarification or guidance.
