Hieroglyphics have been used extensively throughout Meso-american history, used by many groups such as the Olmec and Mayans, Hieroglyphics would first begin in Southern Meso-america around 1100 to 600 B.C (Justeson 440). Sadly some hieroglyphics scripts would be destroyed by the Spanish as they were classified as pagan (Britannica). Meso-american hieroglyphics are so important not only because of what the reveal about the regions history but also because they are the oldest recorded writing system and hieroglyphics found and translated in the world.

The deciphering of Mayan hieroglyphics would reveal much information about Meso-american culture and history. Hieroglyphics would reveal things such as information on religion, important individuals, political ideologies, and the social climate in ancient Maya (Britannica). Hieroglyphics would also reveal a lot about Meso-american leaders, documenting both their lives and deaths giving an idea of how Mayan government would have worked (Britannica). These discoveries would change what we believed about the timeline of human history because of the preserved hieroglyphics scattered across Meso-america.
