The Italian Renaissance lasted for over 200 years, and many important innovations were created during that time. One of the most important innovations is linear perspective in art. Before perspective in art was invented, art was two dimensional and abstract. The development of perspective in art was invented by an Italian architect named Filippo Brunelleschi in 1415, in Florence, Italy. Filippo Brunelleschi created many beautiful art pieces throughout his life and even engineered buildings. He used geometry and the technique of pretending the canvas is a window the artist is looking through to help him find perspective accurately and create three dimensional paintings.

The Birth of Venus
The Birth of Venus is a painting made by Sandro Botticelli in the 1480's. The painting portrays Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, arriving on the shore of Cyprus after being born fully grown. On the left of the painting is Zephyrus, the Greek god of western wind, and either his wife Chloris, the goddess of flowers, or the Titan-goddess Aura, who is the personification of a breeze, blowing Venus to shore. On the right side of the painting is speculated to be Flora, the goddess of spring. This painting is currently in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.

The School of Athens
The School of Athens is a fresco mural painting in the Vatican Museums' Apostolic Palace. It was made in the 1500's by the famous artist Raphael. It depicts ancient mathematicians, philosophers, and scientists gathering to share ideas. This painting shows many famous people such as Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Hypatia, Heraclitus, Euclid, Ptolemy, Diogenes and more. Raphael also included himself in the painting, and he is the only one looking directly at the viewer.

The realistic art style of renaissance was very different than the previous art from the Middle ages. A few years after perspective in art was invented, an architect named Leon Battista Alberti was the first to record the ideas of putting linear perspective into art. He wrote a book called De Pictura, which explained the ideas of perspective in art. After the invention of the renaissance art style, it spread throughout Italy and eventually to other countries. The innovation of perspective in art was beneficial to Italy because it improved art forever and helped Italy's economy grow. There is still a lasting impact of Renaissance art on modern day art and many people go to museums to see art from the Renaissance.
