Kaabo!
Kaabo, or welcome to West Africa! A land of beauty, mystery, and a historical center point that is often too neglected. Sometime in the ninth century a group of people came together, a group of people who unknowingly changed the course of history. These people were the early Ghanians and they went on to slaughter the Bambarian and Aminian and slaughter them they did. An early Arabian historian chronicled the massacres that would occur when they met on the battlefield. The Ghanians spread their empire from modern day Mali into Mauritania. After the Ghanians fell, another beast rose, the Malians. The Malians came to power in the 1230s. They not only expanded farther than the Ghanians, they were richer. And by rich, we mean rich. The Mali Empire was under the man, the more-than-myth, the legendary Mansa Musa. Mansa Musa was an Islamic emperor that ruled Mali, caused global inflation, and had a net worth estimated to be higher than 400 billion USD.
As one of the most recognizable and powerful Islamic rulers of their time, Mansa Musa aided in the spread of Islam and the strengthening of trade ties to other foreign nations including Egypt and of course the Islamic Empire in the Middle East and even as far as India. In the 1460s yet another group came from the same area, the Songhai Empire. These were the warriors who conquered Timbuktu, their empire lasted until the 1590s. These empires ruled in the areas of modern day Mali, Ghana, Guinea, Senegal, Niger, and parts of Mauritania and Algeria. In the 1880s European interest began to grow in the West African territories. France, Belgium, Germany, and Great Britain were major players in the scramble for Africa. Throughout the 1880s those nations would lay claim to many territories including most of West Africa accepting the nations of Liberia and Ethiopia.
