In the 4th Millennium Mesopotamians invented the wheel, a device that was first used as the potter's wheel then evolved to be used for transportation. The wheel was and is a circle that has a connected axle that would be spun by an external force. In modern times the wheel is mainly made of rubber and steel back then the wheel was made of wood or stone. Mesopotamian's used the wheel to make daily tasks more effective and efficient.
Mesopotamian's used the wheel to make agriculture more efficient and effective. The wheel was used in the waterwheel that enabled Mesopotamian's to transport water further and faster than what it would've taken to transport it by hand. Water was scooped up by the water wheel then was dumped into a trough that led to crops making it the first automatic irrigation system.
Mesopotamian's invented the potter's wheel, the first use of the wheel. The potter's wheel allowed people to create pottery more efficiently and effectively. The potter's wheel was a clay disc spun around by a vertical axis connected to a larger wheel that someone could spin. The potter's wheel allowed someone to make a dozen vessels of pottery with the potter's wheel in the amount of time it would have to make one by hand. The potters wheel also improved the overall quality of the pottery making it smoother and stronger.
The wheel was used in an invention called the war chariot. The war chariot consisted of two spoked wheels and its main source of transportation being a horse. The war chariot allowed people to have a better advantage against their enemies as chariots were more maneuverable and faster than a human. The war chariot was made of lightweight wood which allowed it to be pulled easily by a horse. The soldiers on top would normally be armed with spears or bows as they could also keep their distance with these weapons.
Today the wheel is used very commonly in everyday life from transportation to agriculture and even being used in machinery. The wheel began as being made of wood to now being made with high-tech carbon fiber. Rubber tires were invented by Robert William Thompson in 1985. Rubber tires led to transportation being more comfortable and efficient as rubber was more flexible than wood. In agriculture the wheel is used in irrigation, planting, and harvesting crops. Sprinklers are used for irrigation as they can distribute water efficiently through all crops. Tractors are used to plant and harvest crops quickly and efficiently. The wheel makes a big impact on modern day life as it has evolved to be even more efficient and effective.
