An ornithopter is "an aircraft designed to derive its chief support and propulsion from flapping wings" (Merriam-Webster). The ornithopter, developed by Leonardo da Vinci was one of the first flying vehicles ever designed. It was never built in his time, but da Vinci based the contraption on very real physics. The device consisted of a wooden frame on which the pilot would lie, as well as two large canvas or silk wings supported by wooden frames. The pilot would place their legs in stirrups, which activated pulleys to flap the wings (Goodheart).
Leonardo da Vinci designed many different weapons of war. These included a conical tank, a thirty three barreled cannon, and the ornithopter. Da Vinci wanted his ornithopter to be used as an aerial reconnaissance vehicle (Jakab). This would have asserted Italy as a dominant military force over others. Today, aircraft are the most powerful military weapon in the world, and having a flying machine four hundred years ago would have made Italy's military the most forceful power in all of ancient warfare.
The Ornithopter had a several monumental impacts on ancient Italy, as well as modern civilization.
The ornithopter was never built in its time, which prevented it from having any instantaneous effects. However, the device's design was influential in the designs of later craft. Other scientists and engineers such as Borelli and the well known polymath, Lilienthal (Goodheart). Unfortunately, some inventors inspired by da Vinci had unfortunate accidents when testing their vehicles. One famous man, Vincent de Groof, fell to his death in the streets while showing off his ornithopter. Today, movies, literature, and pop culture contain references to this iconic flying machine.
Leonardo da Vinci's aircraft was designed around groundbreaking new physics concepts such as fluid dynamics. Fluid dynamics is a branch of physics that studies the way fluids such as air and water move around an object. The most common fluid dynamics concept is the Bernoulli Effect, or, lift. Da Vinci studied the flapping motion of birds and attempted to assimilate his findings into his ornithopter (Marusic). He outlined his research in his Codex on the Flight of Birds.
