Every Tuesday from September 1 to November 27, I interned at the Louisa County Historical Society in Louisa, Virginia. I was able to learn about the environment of Louisa in the 1950s by transcribing interviews of citizens of Louisa County who lived here during that era. I listened to recordings of other volunteers interviewing residents about various aspects of Louisa at the time, such as education, race relations, and family life and recorded the pertinent information in a Microsoft Excel form.
I was able to work with Karleen Kovalcik, the Executive Director of the Louisa Historical Society. Her degree in Public History helped me gain perspective in how to engage the public in history and added insight to my paper topic and my intended field.
