My community service project was creating a historical cookbook with Robbie Guinn. Mrs. King, our BRVGS adviser, had the initial idea of a cookbook and we developed it from there. We wanted to capture the culinary history of our county while showcasing its cultural diversity. We gathered recipes from both natives of our county and those that immigrated from elsewhere. We compiled these recipes into a cookbook, Savoring Louisa Culture, where it was accompanied by a personal history of the dish.
Due to the large low-income population in the county and the lack of scholarships for culinary school, we wanted to help students realize their dreams, so we created a scholarship for students planning to major in history or culinary. We used GoFundMe to raise the funds for our scholarship, as depicted in the fundraising meter. People who donated $10 or more received a digital copy of our cookbook. We also used a Facebook page to help get recipes and donations.
