Day 9 (18 September 2025) - written by Emma
Today my partner and I thinned our wild type plants and transplanted Group 2's mutant type plants into our pots. We used tweezers, that we "sanitized" in hot water, and toothpicks to thin out and seperate the extra plants. We had to be very careful not to crush the roots in the tiny plants. We had a surplus of wild types, but only 1-2 mutant plants in each pot. There was a green mold-like fungus growing in one of our mutant pots. Izzy and I took pictures using an old camera that didn't work half the time.
To the left are pictures of our Arabidopsis plants on day 13 of the experiment. In each image, the top left plant is the wild type control, the bottom left plant is the wild type experimental, the top right plant is the mutants type control, and the bottom left is the mutants type experimetal.
Day 13 (22 September 2025) - Journal Entry written by Emma
Today my partner and I measured the rosette width and we added our urea solution to the experimental. Most of the mutants were either dead or very small. We used dial calipers to measure the distance and we measured in mm. I was named the primary measure because having the same person measure everything prevents error. My partner put four drops of the urea solution into the four experimental pots.
Day 17 (26 September 2025) - written by Emma
Today we measured rosette distance again and we measured the new bolts on the plants. There were a lot of little tiny ones that were super cute. There were two mini bolts that were only a millimeter tall. The rosettes have gotten at least 2x or 3x times bigger in the wild plants, but only a little bigger (1.3x - 1.5x) in the mutant plants. One of the mutants pots has a white growth around the edge and a few other pots have the green fungus growth. I noticed that the wild plants look a little lighter in color than the mutant plants. The mutants are also visibly smaller than the wilds. There were a couple of dead plants. These plants were purple or yellow and rather small.
Day 20 (29 September 2025) - written by Emma
Today we measured bolt height and rosette width again. The mutants got a little bit bigger, but the wild types got at least 32 times bigger. The wild bolt heights were actually massive. They're my little plants babies. We treated the plants with the urea solution, 4 drops in each. Apparently, there was white stuff growing in the solution. Group 1 accidentally messed up with the urea solution. They watered 2 of their control plants with the solution.
