“Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.” – Stephen Covey
My name is Ananda Brown and I am in my senior year at Orange County High School. Throughout my high school career, I have challenged myself in different aspects of school, taking honors courses since my freshman year and Dual Enrollment courses in my junior and senior years. I have also been involved in the African American Club and the DECA organization. I have held officer positions in both organizations since my sophomore and junior years.
Since learning of this project in the beginning of my freshman year, I knew that I wanted my project to focus on students of color and education. I aimed to address the issue of motivating students of color to take their education seriously and encouraging their participation in higher-level/honors courses. My goal for this project is to pave the way for future students facing similar challenges. I realized that the root of the problem lies in the lack of diversity within the educational environment, as well as the overall community. Therefore, my project will focus on teaching and promoting diversity to younger students in the area, while also educating them on how to direct their own education for a successful future that they want to see.
For my professional learning experience, I worked with Dr Joshua Epps of the University of Virginia. He ultimately helped me create a PowerPoint Presentation for the mentoring program I created for my community service. He also gave me insight into the field of DEI and tips on how to form a college level presentation and research paper.
For my community service, I partnered with James Miller and the Boys and Girls Club in Orange, VA. I worked with 5 other OCHS students to mentor the 4th and 5th graders through my program Inclusive Kids. The program consists of tutoring and teaching them about diversity, equity, and leadership skills.
My research question was "What are the best ways to incorporate diversity and equity in grade school education?" I found three solutions to the issue of lack of diversity: incorporating diversity training into staff development, hiring a racially diverse group of staff, and implementing policies that address race.
