Hello! My name is Alex Lagon, and I am a senior at Louisa County High School. I am the president of my school's branch of the International Thespian Society and an active member of Mainstage and Musical Theater. Along with a dedication to the arts, I'm a member of SODA (the Student Organization for Developing Attitudes), Louisa Reads, & National Honors Society.
I have always been influenced by strong personalities and tend to surround myself with people who possess these personalities; throughout my years in high school, I have had the honor to spend my time with people just as devoted to what they do as I am. My senior project has been focused on youth activism because as my exposure to activism increased in my junior year I felt as though I could no longer sit back and let other people handle the problems that scared me. Throughout my time with NOW I have learned that acting on what scares me has provided me with the ability to feel at peace with it.
I chose the quote above because the first book I ever read on the topic of activism was I am Malala, and it truly opened my eyes to the types of things that other people have to deal with. Malala continues to inspire me and presented me to a world full of powerful youth. Without the things that she is fighting for I'd probably still be scrambling to understand what is happening in today's modern climate. And for that I am eternally grateful.
