Figure 1: A pair of glasses on a book.
According to experts, glasses are the fifth most important invention to mankind. For the first time in human history, millions of people were able to have good eyesight in spite of problems with their vision. Today we take this for granted, but for centuries there was simply no solution for those suffering from a visual impairment – glasses still had to be discovered. It took a long time to develop the modern glasses we know today. This process required a lot of experimentation, and many different types of glasses came and went.
Figure 2: A map of Italy with a dot on Florence
Glasses were first invented in Florence, Italy. Factories were made there and Florence is now known as the home of glasses, although later factories were created in England. At first they would hold chunks of glass up to their face to enlarge letters. Later they would make nose pads , and even later arms for your ears, so that you could wear them on your face with ease.
Figure 3: A depiction of Roger Bacon
In 1268 Roger Bacon first figured out how to enlarge letters with glass. Scribes, illuminators, and scholars all used glasses. Typically, a character wearing eyeglasses became the archetype for someone who was highly educated, sophisticated, or elderly. Soon enough wearing glasses became a symbol of wealth and intelligence. Some accounts mention the first pair of eyeglasses being made around 1284 in Pisa, Italy.
For the first time ever people all around the world would be able to read, see, and do everyday things that they couldn't beforehand. Before glasses if you had a vision impairment no one could do anything to fix it. For centuries there was simply no solution for those suffering from a visual impairment- until someone finally cracked the code. Nowadays, you would think it's normal to have glasses, but at the time, glasses were spectacular. The fact that people could see and read was incredible. Today we take this for granted.

The first newspaper came out in the 15th century 1665 by the London Press, and helped increase the demand for glasses. Printed books were also introduced which increased the need for glasses. Since all this new literature was being printed, glasses were much more needed to read these things. It was a cause and effect cycle, more literacy meant more glasses, and more people seeing meant more literate things being provided.
