Mummy
Mummification is a significant part of Ancient Egypt. It was the base of their religious beliefs. The Egyptians believed preserving the body as life-like as possible needed to happen to pursue a peaceful afterlife. Each person who was mummified was put in a tomb with many of their belongings and sometimes pets to endure the afterlife with them. Without mummification, their religion would be very different.
The mummification process took around 70 days. Firstly, they dried out the body to prevent decay. Next, all of the internal parts were removed with tools such as brain hooks and the organs were placed in canopic jars, which would be buried with the mummy. Embalmers would then cover the body in a special type of salt to remove all of the moisture. Then, any sunken parts of the body were filled in with linen and fake eyes were placed wear real ones used to be. The body was wrapped in 100 yards of linen and sometimes a mask would be placed on the face of the mummy in between the yards of linen. Lastly, the body is covered in warm resin and the last wrap is put on.

Spirit Leaving Mummy
The afterlife was a way for the Egyptians to look forward to the future. There were three spirits called Ka, Ba, and Akh. Ka was the spirit that remained in the tomb and was practically the double of the body, Ba could go in and out of the tomb, and Akh traveled to the underworld to face final judgement. Anubis, the god of the underworld would decide if the heart was light enough to continue to the after life. If the heart was too heavy the body/spirit would go to the "devourer of souls".

The Egyptians dedicated so much time to mummification and their tombs. While the mummification process took around 70 days, the planning and building of their tombs took many years! Not many Egyptians were wealthy enough to have big tombs. Tombs of the wealthy were called Pyramids. Pharaohs and kings spent most of their life planning how their pyramids would be laid out. The pyramids took 20-30 years to build! That's a lot of dedication!

The Egyptians had a better understanding of anatomy than other civilizations due to the mummification process. They had to remove internal parts and organs which gave them a sense of where each part was located. They found ways to preserve the body with the resources they had. We can assume this also helped the Egyptians to gain strength in the medical field.
