OCLC Wellness Program
Wellness experiences at OCLC are accessible to everyone and are an important part of our program. They often involve physical activities such as hiking, cornhole, disc golf, or bowling. Our wellness program helps students earn credits toward PE, Health, and/or Electives.
Sometimes they incorporate wellness education like managing stress or communicating. Through all of these activities, students can reap benefits such as:
Improving mood
Reducing feelings of stress or anger
Improving physical health
Improving confidence and self-esteem
Learning a new skill or concept
Getting to know other people
Connecting to the local community
Appreciating nature
All students are required to participate in wellness activities because they are essential to team building and the culture of OCLC. Many students look forward to trying something new; they also frequently request old favorites.
Jeff Thompson Award
Jeff Thompson was a Union School/Off Campus Learning Center (OCLC) teacher for 33 years, who retired in 2022. He was instrumental in recognizing the importance of supporting physical and mental well-being as an integral part of the alternative experience. Under his leadership, wellness activities have become a cornerstone of OCLC. The Jeff Thompson Award recognizes a graduating OCLC student who positively embraces wellness activities through their enthusiastic engagement in the activities offered each year. In addition, the recipient of this award routinely expresses how they value the wellness experiences through encouragement to other students and the OCLC staff.
