Brunswick High School Guidance/Counseling

The BHS Counseling Department Mission

The Brunswick High School Counseling Department seeks to support, promote and enhance the learning process for all students. The counseling program is a team effort involving school personnel, students, parents and the community. Our program promotes personal, social and emotional growth, educational and career development. We work together with the school and community to facilitate opportunities and choices for students so that they may become productive, responsible citizens who are lifelong learners.

Direct Student Services

Student services include but are not limited to the following:

Students work with their individual counselor from freshman through senior year. This begins in eighth grade with group presentations from school counselors to make students aware of graduation and course requirements as well as the registration process followed by individual meetings. Once in high school, students meet with their counselor on an ongoing basis through group sessions, individual appointments in person or through Google Meet.

As students continue through high school, counselors work with them on a variety of issues and matters including scheduling, career exploration, college search and completion of college applications. Counseling department services also extend to helping with the college search, discussing financial aid and writing letters of recommendation. In addition, Counselors help students explore options such as GAP year opportunities, joining the workforce or enlisting in the military.

Students can seek one-on-one help from their school counselor to discuss personal issues such as bullying or to seek crisis counseling. For students who are struggling, counselors help connect them with resources as well as meet with parents and teachers to identify problem areas and possible solutions. Beyond individual student needs, the school counseling department can also serve as a valuable resource for families. For issues beyond their expertise, school counselors make referrals. The referral may be to a mental health practitioner on site or a community agency, depending on a student's needs and a school's resources.
