Preferably find a desk, or table to sit at, or if not a chair on which you can comfortably balance your Chromebook. No-one is allowed to do their lesson in bed!
Think about what you are wearing. You don't have to wear school uniform. Wear clothes that you would wear when going out - so absolutely no pyjamas or nightwear!
Think about what is behind you, when choosing your broadcasting spot.
Make sure others in your household know you have a lesson, so they don’t accidentally disturb you.
Go to the Google Classroom page of your subject whenever you have a timetabled lesson - just like a normal lesson, it is important to be on time!
Open up your subject destination for the lesson you are about to have.
In the banner, on the classwork page, you will see a link to your lesson.
Click on that link and a new tab will open up and you will see yourself on camera.
Click on ‘Join meeting’.
Your device may ask you to give permission to use your mic and camera. Say yes!
You should then see your teacher on the main screen, along with other classmates.
Say ‘hello’ and then immediately click on the microphone button to switch off your microphone. It will go red.
You then wait for the rest of the class to join.
It is very important to switch off your microphone unless you are actually speaking to the teacher, so that we don’t get unnecessary background noise from all your households!
Your teacher will then start the lesson over the video, just as they would in a normal classroom.
A simple lesson could be you seeing your teacher talking and he or she asking questions to the class that you can then answer live.
If you have a question, you can volunteer by writing a question mark symbol in the messaging feature (top right). Then wait to see if you get picked.
Switch on your microphone any time a teacher asks you a question by name.
A teacher may choose to present a document to everyone at the same time.
Or a teacher might write on their ‘Jamboard’ as they speak, in exactly the same way as they would write on a whiteboard in a real classroom.
A teacher may also upload resources to the stream in the normal way. They may ask you to work on an activity and report back after a specified time.
When they tell you to, click on the red hang-up button in the middle of your screen.
You may be asked by Google to give a star rating to the audio and video. They will also ask you to tick a box/boxes and submit to tell them about any tech problems you might have experienced. This helps Google improve their service.
For all Google Meet lessons:
The usual classroom expectations and standards of behaviour apply to the Google Meet lessons.
Pupils are required to:
join the Google Meet lesson at the correct time according to my timetable.
dress appropriately in day-clothes (no pyjamas, onesies etc.).
be seated at a table or a desk in a quiet room, away from noise and distractions.
only use the messaging feature to indicate that they have a question for the teacher (using a question mark symbol).
be silent throughout unless given permission by the teacher (use the mute button on the screen to ensure there is no background noise).
understand that it is only the teacher who is allowed to mute or disconnect other users.
Any boys not following these expectations will be disconnected by the teacher. Parents will also be informed.
