Guidance for parents

Your role as parents/guardians is crucial to ensuring that your child continues to make the most of their education during any temporary closure of the school premises.

We understand that every household will be different, but we ask you to do everything you can to facilitate your child being online on their Chromebook at the right time, so that their teaching and learning can continue uninterrupted.

Here are some answers to questions that we know you will have about our E-Learning. We will update these as necessary should more questions come in. Please email these to Gordon Francis in his capacity as IT Manager: gfrancis@bruernabbey.org.

What happens if my WiFi at home is not very good?

We realise that some households will have more robust WiFi than others depending on their location and their provider. This is to be expected. We also realise that households may have multiple members at home all competing for bandwidth! All we can do is use the connectivity that is available. Your child will still have access to resources posted on Google Classroom. A register will be taken.

Where exactly should my child do their online lesson?

Sitting at a desk or table in a quiet room, away from loud noises or disturbance. Every home is different, but please discuss with your child where you are happy for them to broadcast from in your house. Please avoid bedrooms.

How will my child know when to be online?

Students and teachers will follow their E-Timetable, which can be found here. Please make sure that you are aware of your child’s timetable and that they are punctual.

How can my child communicate with subject teachers?

Students can communicate with teachers by using the messaging feature on the Google Hangouts session. Additionally, they can leave a comment on any piece of work that has been set up in Google Classroom.

How safe is all this?

Perfectly safe. Your child will be working on their school-managed Chromebook with all the usual safeguarding features in place, exactly as when in school.
