MEMS Library Organization

You might find that the MEMS Library Media Center's organization is a bit different from what you've noticed in other libraries... and it's true! While most nonfiction is organized by the traditional Dewey Decimal System, multiple fiction sections are broken down to make it easier to find the books you're looking for by type and by topic. If you have difficulty matching a book's call number from the catalog to its location in the library, please let Ms. McCall know and we'll locate it together!

Picture Books & Early Chapter Books

Chapter Book Fiction Shelving

E Section: where picture books are organized by author's last name A-Z
EI Section: where early chapter books are organized by author's last name A-Z and some series are in bins
Special interest topics: Some picture books and early nonfiction books about high interest topics such as cats, dogs, animals, things that go, concepts (shapes and numbers), holidays, etc. are located in "nooks" within the library collection. You'll know when searching the catalog that the book you're seeking is here if a sublocation appears that identifies where to look (ex. Primary Dogs)
B Section: picture book biographies are located beyond the special interest topics in order by subject's last name A-Z. There is a separate section for biographies that are chapter books.

This section is organized by genre and color-coded. You'll find the genres in this order on the shelves.

When a book from middle level fiction is found in the catalog, use the spine label (F, FA, FS, etc.) to identify its color-coded location:
