The ARC works with families to advocate for their students. Arc will send representatives to IEP meetings to help make sure all parties are fully understanding and making their voices heard. They also work with families on guardianship process and alternatives. Lastly, Arc gives individual support and provides resources that will help families. All services are free.
Disability Network Lakeshore is able to connect individuals and families with many resources in the area to help with any needs you have. They also work with individuals to train self-advocacy skills for both the IEP process and for the rest of their lives.
DRM advocates and lawyers advise individuals with disabilities of their rights and responsibilities and how to advocate for their human, civil and legal rights within the state of Michigan. DRM has broad access authority to monitor institutions and advocate for people with disabilities who live in them.
Family Matters Parent Training and Information Center, a federally funded Parent Training Center, exists to provide education, support, resources, and community linkages for families navigating the Special Education system, experiencing key educational transitions, and seeking needed supports and services in the school and community. We work with students with disabilities and their families to ensure they understand their educational rights under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), and can fully participate in the Special Education process.
Incompass Michigan is a family advocacy group that pushes for more inclusion in the community and in employment for people with disabilities. The organization provides resources and training for families on how to become more engaged with the special education process and fully advocate for their students.
Michigan Alliance for Families provides support for families by connecting with families who have dealt with the same problems. They provide great information on many topics related to special education.
Special Education Mediation Services is a free service that provides mediation when there is communication problems or issues between the school and families in any area of the special education program. They send a representative to the IEP meeting to help resolve problems.
The PAC is a group of parents who have children with a disability and receive special education services. Members are chosen upon recommendation of an administrator and approved by local school district boards. and final authority to appoint members rests with the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District Board. The PAC strives to represent the interest and concerns of students with special needs and their parents. It also strives to promote partnership between parents, student, the local school district, and the OAISD by facilitating communication and cooperation.
Inclusive futures is a financial advisor resource that helps with any legal, financial, insurance, and social security issues families may have. They especially help create plans for families who are guardians of people with disabilities for if/when the the parents pass on. They provide counseling and help to make sure people with disabilities are taken care of no matter what happens. They can also provide help with the guardianship process and social security.
