ENGLISH SCHOOLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The school chess team took part in the opening round of the English Schools Chess Championships in November. Although they beat Forest School, they were thwarted by Bancroft’s school and so have not progressed to the next round this year. Nonetheless fantastic play was seen by all the team, and congratulations to the players:
Kristian Kiseljov, Leo Hoang, Nathan Xholi, Hexin Chen, James Higgins, Zaidhan Sambucharan
On Wednesday 10th December, the Year 12 Maths A level students took a trip to Maths in Action at the Emmanuel Centre in London, where they learnt about: how maths is saving the Polar regions; how matchboxes learn how to play noughts and crosses; how mathematicians analyse crowd flow; how fractals aren't 2D or 3D but something in between; and most importantly, how many Pokémon it would take to solve the country's energy crisis. It was a successful event, and excited students even managed to get a selfie with their Maths hero Dr Tom Crawford ("TomRocksMaths")!
