If you have never served as a Residential Peer Leader on behalf of the Brown University Office of Residential Life, then the new applicant recruitment and selection process is for you.
If you have ever served as a Residential Peer Leader on behalf of the Office of Residential Life at Brown University, then the returning RPL recruitment and selection process is for you. The term "Returning RPLs" includes RPLs with gaps in between semesters/years of employment. Please note that a Summer@Brown Resident Assistant is not the same as an RPL. "Returning RPLs" does not include students that have previously served as Summer@Brown Resident Assistants but have never served as an RPL.
The Office of Residential Life understands that students' strengths, skills, and capacities for learning are diverse. With this in mind, we are requiring two different formats of application response: written and video.
The deadline for New RPL Application: Written AND Video Components has been extended to 11:59 pm EDT Friday, May 21, 2021. Both first-year and upper-division students are welcome to apply.
The written component of the RPL Application will be completed via Google Form. It is comprised of three core questions. A minimum of 1200 characters (roughly 200 words) is required for each response.
The purpose of the written application is to get a sense of who you are as a student, community member, and leader. It provides an opportunity to indicate your interests and preferences as they relate to the RPL position.
The deadline for New RPL Application: Written AND Video Components has been extended to 11:59 pm EDT Friday, May 21, 2021. Both first-year and upper-division students are welcome to apply.
The video component of the RPL Application will be submitted via Google Form. The video component gives us a sense of your external processing, communication styles, and skill.
Read and reflect upon the five video prompts below
When you are ready, record your responses to all five
State, "Question [#]___" at the beginning of each answer in order to distinguish your responses
Limit your responses to one minute per question

Take a moment to reflect on the ways you communicate with others in your daily life.
What are the characteristics of effective communication?
How do you know when you have communicated effectively?
How would you approach another person if they misunderstood something that you shared?
How do you communicate in a respectful and affirming way?
Why is respectful and affirming dialogue important?
There are many different devices and apps you may use to record your video.

Group Process is traditionally an opportunity for RPL applicants to participate in activities and workshops with their peers. Staff from the Office of Residential Life use this opportunity to assess RPL applicants on their ability to communicate and collaborate effectively. This year, applicants will be placed in small groups and asked to address a challenge relating to resident engagement and community development.
Group Process for Round 1 candidates is now closed.
Group Process for the second round of applicants (those applying by the May deadline) will be scheduled in late May - specific dates are TBD.
It will begin when applicants receive an email with their group assignment and the prompt. All components of the process (final products, video uploads, evaluation forms) must be present in your group's Google Drive folder by the deadline (TBD).
In person, Group Process takes 2-3 hours. We expect a similar time commitment for our virtual process and have provided the following timeline as a guide.
Note: Your group must meet a minimum of two times, for a minimum of 30 minutes each.
First 30-60 minute group meeting
30-45 minute individual work
Second 30-60 minute group meeting
Submission of final products and meeting recordings
15-30 minutes on individual Evaluation Form
Group Process traditionally takes place in person, allowing staff to assess applicants' ability to work together. To facilitate this experience virtually, we will be requiring groups to submit recordings of two full Zoom meetings for review, in addition to the group's final products.
The recordings should be a minimum of 30 minutes in length
The recordings should capture the entirety of your meeting
Record your meetings on a Mac or PC with a webcam using Zoom's Local Recording feature.
Each applicant will work with their assigned group to develop plans for building community together as leaders. The detailed prompt and more information will be shared with applicants via email on Wednesday, February 24, 2021.
Final Product (document, slide deck, etc.)
Approximately 1-2 pages if chosen format is a document
Final Product: Explained (document, slide deck, video, etc.)
An opportunity to walk us through your final product, and why you chose to incorporate different elements
Approximately 3-5 minute if chosen format is a video
Approximately 2-4 pages if chosen format is a document
Two Meeting Recordings (30 minute minimum each)
Evaluation Form
At the conclusion of Group Process each applicant will be asked to evaluate the experience. The Evaluation Form provides applicants an opportunity to discuss their experience as part of their group. The information you provide will be used to inform RPL selection. The evaluation form will be sent following the completion of Group Process.
Individual Interviews for the first round of applicants have been completed.
Individual Interviews for the second round of applicants (those applying by the April deadline) will be scheduled in late May - specific dates are TBD.
Area Coordinators and campus partners in the Brown Center for Students of Color, and the Sarah Doyle Center for Women and Gender, where applicable, will be reaching out to applicants to schedule Individual Interviews directly.

Visit Student Employment's website for a detailed List of Acceptable Documents.
The Office of Residential Life is working with the Assistant Director of Greek and Program House Engagement. In a typical year, the timelines for GPH allotment and RPL selections would align. This year, RPL candidates that have already been allotted space in GPH for fall 21 may change residences should they be selected for, and accept the RPL role.
