Letter from the Editors
Dear Readers,
We are proud to present the 4th annual edition of The Polyglot, Brown’s only multilingual literary publication! With this year’s theme, the Architecture of Belonging, we hope to explore language in its relationship to belonging, examining how the words which inhabit us influence our sense of home. Though there is no print version this year, we are proud to present you with this digital edition.
From memories rooted in a room, to reflections on structure that evoke comfort or distance, we welcome stories that bring to life the interplay between the home as a feeling and the house as a place. Language is intimately interwoven with the concept of self, serving as our primary means of expression. Whether through memory or storytelling, to put into words is to remember. It breathes life into the dead and transports an audience to worlds both familiar and fantastical, stirring up emotions long thought lost. It beckons us to delve into the rich tapestry of tradition and novelty that stories weave across cultures and languages.
As a multilingual journal dedicated to showcasing the diverse work of Brown students, we welcome all genres and types of submissions, inclusive of all academic disciplines and language levels. By publishing work across all tongues, we hope to elevate voices within our communities which may otherwise go unheard. In doing so, we affirm the importance of linguistic diversity and honor the multiplicity of ways in which stories can be told.
Through this volume, we raise the question of how language might build a home, or quietly reshape the ties to those you have known. As you lose yourself in this year’s contributions, we encourage you to rethink your own relationship to the written word and its ability to transcend barriers, both spatial and temporal. With that, we welcome you to Volume 4 of The Polyglot.
Happy reading!
