The key to success in Math 0520 is taking advantage of all of the resources available to you. Here's an overiew of what's at your disposal:
Our teaching team is a group of passionate graduate and undergraduate students who want to help you achieve your learning goals. You'll be receiving lots of feedback from the team on a variety of assessments, and they'll be active in our slate channels to help out with Q&A.
The teaching team will also help me collect feedback from you about how the course is going throughout the semester. This will help us adapt as necessary to deliver a great experience for everyone.
Come by for virtual office hours! These blocks of time are great for you to get some honest face time in with myself and the teaching team. These blocks can be used to get help with homework, reinforce concepts from lectures, or simply for us to get to know each other better.
We'll be setting aside separate office hours for homework help, concept review, and coffee-chats once the term starts. You're also welcome to reach out and set up a scheduled meeting.
One of your greatest resources is your cohort of fellow Math 0520 students. Through the conference sections and slate channels, we hope that you get to know many of your classmates even though we're in a virtual space. We hope you feel comfortable asking your peers for help throughout the course, and we encourage you to pay it forward and help out your classmates yourself when an opportunity presents itself.
The textbook is a great second sources for the material that we cover. To make the videos more accessible and engaging, they will often be kept quite short. You can count on me to cover the material we need for the course, but you may find that following up the lectures with a review of the textbook section might reinforce your learning. You'll also find a number of additional topics and examples in the textbook that could clarify a concept from the lectures for you.
In addition to the Math 0520 resources described above, Brown University offers a wide range of resources at your disposal. Here are a few of them:
Students Support Services Deans can be a helpful resource to discuss personal, family or health-related concerns, as well as a potential academic and personal plan. They are available for same-day consult and/or scheduled appointment.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a range of mental health services to the Brown community, including individual psychological treatment, mental health support, medication management, trainings and consultation for faculty and stuff, crisis stabilization, after hours assessment and urgent care, outreach programming, and groups.
The Sheridan Center's Academic Tutoring Program is a free group-tutoring program to support you in your studies.
