Professor Larry Larson

Professor Larson joined Brown University in 2011 where he was the inaugural dean and Sorensen Family Dean of the School of Engineering from 2011-2022. During the second half of the 2023 academic year, he served as Interim Provost at Brown. During his tenure as dean, he oversaw a significant expansion of the School of Engineering, construction of over 100,000 square feet of new research space, development of new academic programs, expansion and diversification of the faculty, and over $180M in fundraising.

In 1996, he joined the faculty of the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), where he was the inaugural holder of the Communications Industry Chair. From 2001 to 2006, he was Director of the UCSD Center for Wireless Communications, and from 2007 to 2011, was Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCSD.

From 1980 to 1996, he was with the Hughes Research Laboratories (now HRL) in Malibu, CA, USA, where he directed the development of high-frequency microelectronics in GaAs, InP, Si/SiGe, and MEMS technologies.

He has authored or coauthored over 350 papers and has coauthored four books. He holds over 40 U.S. patents, and has graduated over 30 PhD students. Dr. Larson is recipient of multiple awards, including the Hughes Sector Patent Award in 1994 for his work on RF MEMS, the 1996 Lawrence A. Hyland Patent Award of Hughes Electronics for his work on low-noise millimeter-wave HEMTs and the 1999 IBM Microelectronics Excellence Award for his work in Si/SiGe HBT technology. His students have received multiple "best-paper" awards at international conferences.  He received his BS from Cornell in 1979 and his PhD and MBA from UCLA.  He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.
