Meet the HITS Team

Principal Investigator

Mark Suchman is a Professor of Sociology at Brown University. His research interests center on the relationship between legal, organizational and technological change, particularly in the information technology and healthcare sectors. He holds an AB from Harvard (1983), a JD from Yale Law School (1989), and a PhD in Sociology from Stanford (1994).

Before moving to Brown in 2008, Mark taught at the University of Wisconsin and at Cornell Law School, and was a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar in Health Policy Research at Yale and a faculty fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Be-havioral Sciences. He has chaired the American Sociological Association's Sections on Sociology of Law and on Organizations, Occupations and Work, and has served on the Boards of the Law and Society Association and the American Bar Foundation.

Doctoral Research Associate

Elizabeth Brennan is a PhD Candidate in Sociology at Brown University. Her research interests include medical sociology, organizations, professions, law, and technology. She has been an active member of the HITs research team since 2014.

Elizabeth's dissertation examines the impact of the electronic health record (EHR) on the field of healthcare. She focuses on perceptions of autonomy both across and within three professions: physicians, administrators, and health information technologists. Employing a qualitative methodology, she seeks to understand how each of these professions perceive the EHR, how the technology affects their work processes, and subsequently how this contributes to their sense of autonomy.

Research Assistants

Ariana Haji is a junior at Brown University studying Business, Entrepreneurship, and Organizations as well as International and Public Affairs. Outside of classes, she's a writer for Brown Political Review and a member of the Fashion@Brown Business Team. In the past, she's worked on research on microfinancing for female entrepreneurs in the Global South.

Imran Dharamsi is a sophomore at Brown University studying Economics and Public Health.
