We are very glad you are interested in determining your level of German by taking the placement test. Whether you have taken German in high school, lived abroad or grew up speaking German with relatives, this placement test will let you know which course offered at Brown would be the place to start.
Experience tells us that if you have achieved a 5 on the AP German test, you should enroll in GRMN0500. This course counts towards our concentration, so you are already making progress! You are welcome to take the placement test regardless of what score you received on the AP exam.
You must complete both parts of the test: 1) the online German placement test + 2) the short written response Jane_Sokolosky@brown.edu. Here's what you need to do:

If you have already taken a test for another languages, please email Herr Fine to gain access to the German one.
Create an account and a password using a brown.edu email . You do NOT have to add your Brown user id. Please ignore that box.
Enter your name and email address. There is no need to enter an ID number or a password. Please email Herr Fine right away if you have are having difficulties.
The test is adaptive and can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Please complete everything to the best of your ability without any external help.
#2) Finally, send an email answering the questions below to Herr Fine. All answers must be in German.

Erzählen Sie von einer Reise oder von Ihrem Tag gestern. Benutzen Sie die Vergangenheitsform. Please talk about a trip you took in the past or some other day in the past, you can even write about what you did yesterday. You should use the past tense.
You will receive your placement decision shortly after sending the email to Herr Fine.
