Bridge Scholars Program Staff

Frank Garcia-Ornelas, MSW (he, him, his)

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - BRIDGE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Hometown: Kansas City, KS

Frank's commitment to uplifting underrepresented college students is deeply rooted in the resilience he cultivated as a first-generation and low-income college student. His work is grounded on the fundamental principle of "caring for the whole person," a principle deeply ingrained in him through his experience as a social worker.

Frank has over 10 years of professional experience supporting underrepresented student populations at small elite private universities, mid-size liberal arts campuses, and large state system institutions. Frank designs programs that support diverse groups of students, creates spaces where students can be their authentic selves, and has developed a strong sense of responsibility for preparing students to become leaders.

In his spare time, Frank loves being a father to his 3 young children, researching when the next fresh pair of Jordans or NMDs are coming out, listening to as many podcasts as one can, and talking about creating separate Hip-Hop and Higher Education podcasts (does he even have the time though?).

Lastly, Frank wants students to understand that college can be a unique challenge, but what in life isn't. He says, "I unfortunately chose to navigate my undergraduate experience on my own, with minimal support. You don't have to. I'm here to walk alongside you on this journey, and I'm bringing a community of colleagues that are ready to walk this journey with us as well."

Sean Wilder Jr. (he, him, his)

AREA COORDINATOR - RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Hometown: Meriden, CT

Sean is the eldest of 3 and a first generation college student from Connecticut. He received his Bachelor's degree in Business Management from Southern Connecticut State University and a Master's degree in College Student Personnel from the University of Rhode Island. Outside of Residence Life he has also worked in Orientation, University Access, and Leadership Development. Sean has a commitment to enhancing students' sense of belonging at colleges and dismantling oppressive concepts. His Student Affairs philosophy stems from his self- authorship values, personal experiences, and the influence he strives to leave in the spaces he encounters.

In his free time Sean enjoys being a father to his family, trying out new restaurants, playing basketball, cheffing it up and listening to music. He loves kangaroos and collecting sneakers. If you see him around campus say hi!

What place on campus feels most like home to Yajaira:

"There isn't one tangible space on campus that feels like home because home to me is where I feel community and where I feel loved. I have found homes in lounges, conference rooms, classrooms, random booths in the Blue Room, and more. Those are just a few places where I have come together with friends that make me feel comfortable in myself, comfortable enough to drop all the daily masks I wear."
