An Introduction

The Family Center at Brooklyn Friends School is an early childhood program designed to meet the developmental needs of two-year-old children. In a nurturing, child-centered environment, children begin to discover the world outside home and family and learn about themselves in the context of a community of peers.

Play is the essential work of childhood and an important part of developing cognitive, emotional, and problem-solving skills. In a day’s work the children build, climb, cook, run, paint, dance, share, listen, and laugh. Our program supports each child’s learning style and developmental readiness where children feel safe and free to explore the world around them.

The program is housed in a separate, stand-alone facility at 189A Schermerhorn Street, between Hoyt and Smith Streets.

All Family Center children need to be two years old at the start of the school year to enroll in the program, which runs for one academic year, from September to June.
