Our creative zine-making workshop followed a thought-provoking talk by Miao He, Senior Schools and Colleges Liaison Officer at Oxford Brookes University, who shared her personal journey of returning to work after maternity leave, navigating organisational change and learning to prioritise her own wellbeing during a significant life transition.
Building on Miao's reflections, Dina Sikorska introduced participants to zine making as a simple, creative way to pause, reflect and capture their own experiences through words, images and collage.
Participants were invited to create a mini zine exploring three stages of their own journey:
Before – life before becoming a parent or carer.
The Realisation – the moment life changed, and the emotions that came with it.
Where I Am Now – where they are today, what they've learned and what continues to support them.
There was no right or wrong way to create a zine. Some used words, others photographs, magazine cuttings, colours or simple sketches. Each one tells a different story, while highlighting the experiences so many parents and carers share.
