The MA Music at Brookes, which ran until 2023, had a popular musicology module designed and delivered by members of PMRU. We also supported many dissertations in popular music, including topics on punk rock, music and copyright, the politics of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and the influence of tiktok on pop musical structures. Occasional seminars and listening groups organised by PMRU attract both undergraduate and postgraduate students and are open to all. The MA in Music has now been replaced with the Music strand of the MA in Creative Industries, which includes members of PMRU contributing on the study of popular music in the context of creation and reception practices in the broader music industry.
PhD submissions in popular music at Brookes have included topics in jazz history, film music, electronica, music in the 1980s broadsheet press, genre and Radiohead, and the New Romantics.
We welcome applications from prospective PhD students, particularly in the fields of popular music analysis, record production, music publishing, music journalism, popular music on screen and popular music history.
In this video former MA Music students Becky, Ben, and Anna talk about their experiences studying in the School of Arts at Oxford Brookes University.
