Women in International Schools’ Empowerment (WISE) promotes equity in international schools. WISE serves as a network and resource base for those who identify as women working in the international education sector, while welcoming others as allies in support of our mission. WISE commits to being inclusive and advocating for women holding underrepresented intersectional identities. WISE seeks to do this by: offering professional learning opportunities, leadership development support and advocating for student agency through events to promote gender equality as well as networks to develop guidance for schools.
As a response to the need for support for the empowerment for women in international schools, WISE was established by British School Manila Leaders, Katie Tomlinson and Thea Williams in 2022. It is now run by an Advisory Board of volunteers.

The Data
The underrepresentation of women in leadership positions is a reality in many organisations and industries / occupations and for schools in international settings this is no different. According to Times Educational Supplement 2019 data:
In secondary schools 63% of the teaching staff are female but they make up fewer than 38% of Headteachers.
In primary schools, whilst only 14% of the teaching staff are male, 27% of primary Heads are men.
In October 2021, the Council of International Schools (CIS) found that a Head of School is three times more likely to be male. The most disheartening aspect of these statistics is that the leadership landscape internationally is changing at an almost negligible pace.
