Student Safety Spotlight: Understanding David’s Law
At Blue Ridge Middle School, we are committed to creating a safe and respectful environment for all students. One important law that helps us protect students from bullying—especially cyberbullying—is David’s Law.
David’s Law is a Texas law passed in 2017 after the tragic loss of a high school student named David Molak, who was a victim of cyberbullying. This law strengthens protections for students and helps schools take action against bullying that happens both in person and online.
Addresses Cyberbullying: It makes serious cyberbullying a crime.
Supports Schools: Schools can take action even if the bullying happens off campus or online, as long as it affects students at school.
Requires Reporting Tools: Schools must provide a way for students to report bullying privately and safely.
Involves Parents: Schools must inform the parents of both the victim and the person accused of bullying.
Allows Police Involvement: In serious cases, schools can contact law enforcement.
David’s Law reminds us that bullying—whether it happens face-to-face or behind a screen—can cause serious harm. By standing together and supporting each other, we can make our school a safer, kinder place for everyone.
