COME ONE, COME ALL!!!
ALL FAMILIES AND CARERS WELCOME!!
More to come on the exciting and talented Australian authors and illustrators who are shortlisted in the Book of the Year prizes!!!
Many people ask me, 'What's it like to be a writer, Paul Jennings?' Well, it's a great life. I don't think I would want to do anything else. I get an enormous amount of mail from all over the world. I always think how lucky I am that people like my stories so much that they take the time to let me know. That's really great. Most of them want to know more about me. That's what this page is all about — to tell you something about me and my life.
I was born in England on 30 April 1943 — it was still wartime. We lived in a place called Heston, near London. I can remember that there was an airport over the road. When I was six I left England, with my parents and my little sister Ruth, to come and live in Australia. That was in 1949. In those days, people came to Australia by boat. The one we came on was called the Ranchi. We sailed for five weeks before arriving in Melbourne.
When I was very small I loved Rupert The Bear books and later on I enjoyed William books by Richmal Crompton. I went to Bentleigh West Primary School — I can still remember my favourite teacher. He was Mr Wheeler and when I put a nice teacher in my books I always think of him. I had a good childhood — I can remember all the good parts, like the holidays and my mother's bread and butter pudding, very clearly. I can also remember all the fears and feelings of childhood that aren't so good. Feeling very small and powerless. The guilt and the embarrassment. The monster that I was quite sure lurked in the shadows. These are the things that I write about in my stories and which make some children ask 'How do you know what it's like to be me?' It's because I haven't forgotten those feelings — and nearly all children, even the bullies, have feelings like these.
When I left school I decided to be a teacher and went to Frankston Teachers College. I taught for a while at Frankston State School and Kangaroo Flat State School. Then I taught at the Turana Youth Training Centre and the Royal Children's Hospital State School in Mount Eliza. I went back to study at the Lincoln Institute and became a speech pathologist, then I worked as a Lecturer in Special Education at Burwood State College. I moved to the Warrnambool Institute of Adult Education in 1979, and worked as a Senior Lecturer in Language and Literature. After a few years lecturing and writing part time, I became a full-time writer in 1989. Unreal! was published in 1985. Most writers have to write in their spare time until they know if they can make a living from writing. So for four years I worked as a lecturer and wrote part time.
I started writing in Warrnambool but moved to Belgrave in the Dandenong Ranges in 1989. I lived there with my family for ten years before moving back to Warrnambool, my home by the sea, in 1999.
I have six grown up children and nine grandchildren. In my spare time I love walking along the foreshore and spending time with my family and friends.
So from writing part time on my own, life has changed a lot. My books sales now total over 8.9 million and have been translated into 18 languages. I am so busy I can't do everything myself, so my secretary works in the office; helping with correspondence, paying bills and doing all the things which make everything run smoothly, so that I can concentrate on what I like doing best - writing.

Welcome back to To a brand new school year!
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and had the chance to rest, read and relax.
What is happening in the Library ?
So much!!
So many new books and resources, the library is looking very smart, very tidy and is filled to the brim with great reads!
The library is open at lunchtime at 2 - 2.30 every day. Whether you wish to relax, read a book, craft, play board games, colour in, listen to a guest reader or use a a computer; it is all available here in the Library. We have our Library Captains ready to help you with borrowing too!
Library orientation sessions will be held in the first 2-3 weeks of term 1 for all classes . These incorporate using the library cataloguing system to search for resources, how the library works, how to find a good book, care of books, library literacy terms (genre, fiction, reference etc). Books and activities will be part of the fun.
If you are in Prep, Grade 1 or Grade 2, you will need to bring your library bag if you would like to borrow, any waterproof named bag will be fine!
Wishing all our families and students the very happiest Christmas and may 2019 bring you all that you could wish for.
To our Grade 6 students - Congratulations on being a wonderful year; I hope you remember your time at BBPS fondly.
Come and join us in the hall this Wednesday 15th August at 9.00am for our annual whole school Book character parade!! Everyone dresses up, even the teachers and staff!!
This is a happy event, where we celebrate the book characters that have brought us excitement, laughter, adventure and sometimes, an understanding of other peoples lives. These are just some of the feelings that some of our students have reported about the characters that made an impact on them.
Let us all make reading a part of our everyday life! Give yourself a 10 minute break every night to enjoy reading with a special person!
Right: What a turn out for our annual Book Character Parade!
Left: Were's Franz?
Illustrations from Left and Right: A selection of nominated books of the year. Many of these will be read during the week's and week of Book Week. We are voting on our favourite book and we will compare the Brighton Beach Primary School's choice to the Children's Book Council's choice. Will it be the same book?? We will make an announcement on the Library Captains page and also at assembly.
If you have overdue library books, please send them back as soon as possible. We like to check books at least once a term for damage and cleanliness. As well keep books circulating between students.
Above and right: National Simultaneous Story time was held in the library at both 11 am and 1.30 pm . Activities included learning to draw mice and making finger puppets of the main characters.
Right: A group of grade 1 book club members with origami kites. These were inspired by one of Flat Stanley's many adventures!
National Simultaneous Storytime at Brighton Beach Primary School
At 11.00 am across Australia on Wednesday 23 May, many eager listeners will be listening to 'Hickory Dickory Dash' by Tony Wilson (illustrations by Laura Wood).
This is an annual event that promotes Australian authors and illustrators and the joy of reading out loud.
We will have a reading uploaded on to the Library Blog for families, students and teachers to enjoy from the 22nd of May to the 24th of May. Click on the more button above, the drop down menu will have a Multi Media tab to connect you to the reading.
The Library Captains and friends will be reading this book at lunchtime in the Library as well!
During the last week of every term we close borrowing in the Library. The exceptions are the grade 5's and 6's as they traditionally read longer books as well as being a perk of being a senior student.
But why? I'm really enjoying my book: Well, if you are still reading a novel or long non fiction book, then of course we will let you keep this over the holidays! Just inform Sophie in the Library or your Teacher.
Why do we ask for all books to be returned? This is to help us keep track of late returns and popular books. This allows us to distribute these items evenly around the school. We also check items for damage and clean books that need a bit of TLC!
Parent Shelf: We have a shelf devoted to professional development and interesting titles that are set aside on a shelf in the Library. Any parent or guardian is welcome to borrow from there. Just pop in to the library between 3.30 and 3.45pm and have a browse!
