Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify, manipulate, and use the sounds in spoken words (called phonemes) within words. Phonemes are the smallest unit of spoken language. Phonemic awareness can be broken down into six tasks varying in complexity. These include the ability to isolate sounds, blend sounds, segment sounds, add sounds, delete sounds, and substitute sounds.
