Does it feel like your everyday life is harder than it should be? Are you feeling overwhelmed or burnt out?
Occupational therapy can help you break down the barriers to the life you want to lead.
Hello, I’m Jennifer, a Virginia-licensed occupational therapist with a clinical doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University.
My approach to therapy is collaborative, practical, and neurodiversity-affirming.
My advanced training includes:
Executive functioning support
Ayres Sensory Integration® and sensory-based strategies
The Alert Program® for self-regulation
Interoception and Kelly Mahler’s curriculum
Mindfulness and DBT-informed strategies
Motivational interviewing
Evidence-based parent coaching for neurodivergent families
If you are a neurodivergent adult who identifies as autistic, ADHD, or has sensory processing issues, you may benefit from the type of support that I provide. I am also qualified to provide treatment for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and pain disorders, among other conditions. I am a trauma-informed care provider.
Occupational therapists are trained to help people navigate the challenges that disability or illness can create in everyday life.
OTs consider how the brain, body, environment, routines, and daily demands interact. They look at what you are trying to do, what is getting in the way, and what could be changed to make it easier.
OTs recognize that you are the expert on yourself and your life. The therapist’s role is to bring clinical knowledge, practical tools, and an outside perspective to a collaborative process centered on your priorities.
In addition to specialized areas of training, all OTs are educated in the same foundational methods:
Developing a comprehensive profile of each client’s strengths, needs, priorities, and daily life
Setting and tracking meaningful goals collaboratively
Analyzing activities and tasks to identify barriers
Adapting routines, tasks, and environments
Developing compensatory strategies and external supports
Breaking complex activities into manageable steps
Building skills and confidence through supported practice
Supporting participation, life satisfaction, and quality of life
Providing evidence-based evaluation and treatment
Therapy can help you better understand yourself, recognize your needs and priorities, and feel empowered to build the life you want. You’ll receive personalized support to help you pursue your goals. Together, we can make daily routines more manageable, balance work and recovery, identify patterns and triggers, understand and support your sensory needs, and develop practical strategies for planning and organization.
I will introduce myself and we can discuss whether virtual occupational therapy might be a good fit for you. I'll answer any questions you may have. I can also describe the therapy process, so you have a better picture of what it will entail.
During your first appointment, we will get to know each other and complete a semi-structured interview called the the COPM (Canadian Occupational Performance Measure). The COPM looks at what matters most to you and how satisfied you are with various aspects of your life. I will ask for some important background information, and we can consider any other relevant standardized assessments. Then we will start to identify some goals and make a plan for moving forward.
