Everybody loves comics. If you don't, it means you just haven't found the right comic yet. From humor to action, mystery to drama, comics tell stories in a way all their own. This course takes a closer look at the medium we love so dearly, what makes it unique, what makes it important, and what it takes to make comics that resonate with audiences in a meaningful way.
This module is an introduction to comics. Students are introduced to the medium, what makes it unique compared to other mediums, and explore a variety of styles and types of comics. This module introduces Critical Visual Analysis skills, formatting skills and a philosophy of ongoing growth.
In this module students are introduced to the production pipeline. From ideation, planning, pencils and through to polish. Students are provided a series of lectures, discussions and demonstrations, in addition to targeted exercises designed to give experience building professional level skills.
Context is essential for creating meaningful, intentional art. Students will go through the history of comics, with an emphasis on the connection between media and culture. From WW2 propaganda comics to the Punk comic renaissance, through to the modern era, students will discuss the societal climate that created the artworks they so dearly love.
In the Professional Practicum portion of the class, students will design and follow through on a project to generate pages for their own anthology. Students will apply the practical skills they have learned in order to produce professional quality work, and have their work published in print.
