Kindergarten through Fifth Grade (K-5) Curriculum Scope and Sequence
Bridgehampton’s Elementary Spanish Program is an academically enriching program designed for developing oral proficiency and cultural awareness in Spanish. Our curriculum is research based, modeled from best practices, and aligned with state and national standards. Students master essential knowledge, skills, and competencies in the target language. This occurs by having students participate in a broad range of opportunities both within and outside of the classroom setting. It is imperative that students apply the knowledge, skills, and competencies to real world issues so that their learning experience is personal, and therefore, meaningful. They meet in Spanish class one period a day per week for forty five minutes each period. At the end of fifth grade, students move from their elementary language study into the sixth through twelfth grade program. Implementation of the curriculum is as follows:
Year 1: The Kindergarten curriculum will be used in K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th/5th grades
Year 2: The K curriculum will be used in K. The 1st grade curriculum will be used in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th/5th Year 3: Kindergarten and 1st grade will follow their respective curriculums, and the 2nd grade curriculum will be used in 2nd, 3rd, 4th/5th
Year 4: Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades will follow their respective curriculums and the 3rd, 4th/5th will follow the 3rd grade curriculum.
Year 5: Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades will follow their respective curriculums and the 4th/5th will follow the 4th/5the grade curriculum which will complete the cycle of implementation.
In kindergarten students begin simply by recognizing and responding to new words in a structured context. Then, in first grade and in each subsequent grade, students will review words that they acquired in the previous level and then learn more vocabulary to support a given topic. They will begin to provide the words independently within a given context and the capability to communicate in the target language will strengthen in each subsequent grade level. This transition will happen naturally as our curriculum spirals and builds on previous learning from grade level to grade level. Students’ speaking skills will become more refined as they practice in a given context and with new vocabulary words. Students will be able to find cognates of Spanish and English which will help them foster a confidence in communication, both written and orally. Students will be increasingly able to recognize both written and spoken Spanish and reproduce the target language with each subsequent grade level.
Our goal is to expose students to the Spanish language in a culturally enriching and academically stimulating environment. Through their exposure to a world language, students develop at a young age respect for other cultures and the ability to communicate in a foreign language. Classes are taught almost exclusively in the target language. Opportunities for use of the target language are offered as one-on-one interactions with the teacher, in pairs, as a whole group or as individuals. We incorporate culture through communication, song and dance, arts and crafts, the celebration and/or discussion of holidays and exposure to culinary experiences.
