Welcome to Advanced Placement Language and Composition!
As the title suggests, this course is all about how to use language and to compose essays. This is essentially a college level course, which means students will be writing university level essays -or working their way to that level of writing and thinking. The hope and expectation is that they intend to take the AP Exam in May in an attempt to earn some college credit. Students should be sure to check with the university(ies) of their dreams to see what credit(s) they can earn with what AP scores. Each college is different with specific requirements for credit retrieval.
In this class students can expect the tone to be that of a college class but with the added support of a high school teacher. Essays will receive two types of scores: a standard based grade (4,3,2,1,0) AND an AP score (6,5,4,3,2,1,0) as one is for the grade book and one is to show how college board would assess the work. Contact me for further explanation.
Like a class at the university level, all readings are to be done as homework. That includes reading the text in its entirety AND rereading it for the purpose of analysis and note taking. Students are expected to grapple with the concepts, genre, vocabulary, and rhetorical devices in each before coming to class. Questions about the text are expected and our class discussion will show whether the student gave the reading actual consideration rather than a passing glance. It will be imperative that the readings are completed before we meet. Class discussions will lose all power if students don't know the text we are discussing.

In AP Language students will analyze texts not only for their content, but how the author communicates that content on a specific audience and for a specific purpose. Then, they will learn three different ways to write essays for specific purposes AND take challenging Multiple Choice tests.
Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the syllabus and the expectations of the class. See syllabus below.
I look forward to prepared and engaging discussions about academic topics in class.
FYI: I write exceptional letters of recommendation for those students who have excellent work habits. I will NOT be a reference for a student I would not hire, so how well a student decides to meet the standards, determines how well a teacher will support them when it's time to look for college acceptance or employment.
