This scope and sequence was created to support educators and program staff in implementing the Human First Framework. It describes developmentally appropriate expectations for students in each competency of the HFF (knowledge and love of self, solidarity, and self-determination).
The student scope and sequence is aligned to the advisory curricula below and any new subsequent curricula that will be created by the National Office.
Below are life skills units aligned to the Human First Framework. The interdisciplinary academic curriculum series in particular creates many opportunities for students to grow in their Knowledge and Love of Self, Solidary, and Self-Determination. However, we recognize that learning is inherently a social and emotional experience. All curricula developed by the National Office in the future will align with the competencies in the Human First Framework. Check out the Breakthrough Curriculum website to see the full scope of our curriculum resources!
Reach out Linda Francis, our Manager of Learning and Instruction, if you have any questions about the curricula (lfrancis@breakthroughcollaborative.org).
The Know Your Rights unit introduces students to the foundational ways in which liberty has been defined and expanded throughout American history, starting with the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Students will explore the meaning of these texts and apply their knowledge to deepen their understanding of how these rights have been applied and understood throughout history. Additionally, students will build a nuanced understanding of how these rights apply to their own lives, not only learning how they can exercise their rights but also contributing to the expansion of democracy in their communities.
Human First Framework Alignment:
Knowledge and Love of Self: Benchmark 3 (Self-Efficacy)
Self-determination: Benchmark 2 (Critical Action)
*This unit is not an life skills unit, but it builds the foundation for future interdisciplinary units below.
Adapted from the Erased Histories Unit, written by Alexandria Smith and Zander Nowell, and Breakthrough’s previous Photo Justice Unit, the Our Histories Unit was created to merge learning about cultures, people, and events to allow students to understand the world around them. Students will engage with articles about historical events and figures, current events, and photography. Students will not only learn about social issues, but also research and analyze them, creating a final product that will address the impacts their selected issue has on their program, community, and world.
Human FIrst Framework Alignment:
Knowledge and Love of Self: Benchmark 2: Self-Management
Solidarity: Benchmark 2: Relationship Skills
Self-Determination: Benchmark 2: Responsible Decision-Making
The Our Narratives Unit was created for two reasons: 1) to provide students the space to write about themselves in fun and creative ways for a personal narrative and 2) for students to look at the writing of others and learn different writing strategies to influence their narrative writing. Adapted from PEAR’s Our Stories Unit and strategies and skills utilized in the Writers’ Workshop Model, students will be encouraged to write about their life experiences and interests to share with their peers. The unit will culminate with a final narrative product of the student’s choosing.

This Holistic Learning Lesson Suite has been created to provide affiliates with options for lesson delivery based on student needs and interests. There are 6 lessons in the suite, and topics were selected based on affiliate input. The six lessons cover the following topics: Mental Health, Setting Goals, Core Values, Bullying Prevention, Mission and Purpose, and Self-Awareness. Each lesson contains a core activity, each of which is project-based or activity-based.
In the Reducing Stress Unit, students will learn about stress, the causes and effects of stress, and methods for managing stress. This unit is designed to provide students with a structured space to discuss and learn about stress while building their stress management toolkit. Each lesson has a core activity during which students are actively engaging with content and activities about stress. The unit culminates in an infographic project, in which students will create an infographic that teaches a general audience about a stress reduction technique. While many causes of stress are rooted in systemic inequities that require systemic solutions, students will be able to experience relieving and accessible strategies for responding to stress.
Human First Framework Alignment:
Knowledge and Love of Self
In the Interpersonal Relationships unit, students will reflect on, discuss, and learn about developing interpersonal relationships in in-person and online contexts. Students in modern society experience interpersonal connection and relationship development in person with their friends, family, peers, etc, and increasingly, young students also need explicit support and instructions about engaging with others online.
Human First Framework Alignment:
Solidarity
Self-Determination
**Based on affiliate feedback from the pilot, the National Office adapted this unit into an interdisciplinary History/ELA/holistic learning unit. You are welcome to use this unit, but we recommend checking out Our Histories first!
