Training to become a deputy voter registrar (VDR) can be taken in-person or online. To be eligible to become a VDR in Texas, you must be a Texas resident at least 18 years old. More qualifications can be found on the Secretary of State's website.
VDR classes are held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Elections Administration office, 300 E. William Joel Bryan Pkwy., Bryan. Information about the training is at BrazosVotes.
To reserve a seat, please call Kathy Schuetze, Voter Registration Coordinator, at 979-361-5773. A photo ID is required.
Alternatively, download and complete a deputy registrar request form. Email it to kscheutze@brazoscountytx.gov.
Those who have been deputized in another county can schedule an appointment to be deputized in Brazos County. Be prepared to provide the Certificate of Appointment from the other county and a photo ID.
Powered by People offers 45-minute VDR trainings over Zoom three times per week. If you have any questions, email info@poweredxpeople.org.
If you have taken online training or been deputized in another county, you can call Kathy Schuetze at 979-361-5773 to schedule an appointment to be deputized in Brazos County. Be prepared to provide the Certificate of Appointment from the other county and a photo ID.
The Texas Secretary of State (SoS) website has a VDR training slide presentation available, although it doesn't offer online training for certification as a VDR.
Use Your Training
Make sure to bring the following when you register voters:
a certificate of appointment
a number of voter registration applications
pens
receipt book
voter registration guide
Local voter registration opportunities can be found on the Facebook page, Brazos County Democratic Volunteer Deputy Registrars.
With permission from event coordinators, VDRs can set up tables at public events. For example, Scott Nelson has established a tradition of events during the three lunch periods to register eligible Bryan High School students and teachers to vote.
