What Sororities are here at UNCP? Alpha Sigma Alpha, Kappa Delta, and Zeta Tau Alpha are the three sororities here at UNCP.
How can I join a sorority? In order to join a sorority, it is required that every member go through formal or informal recruitment. Formal Recruitment for 2024 will be conducted in the fall! Participation throughout the entire Recruitment process is expected. It is also important to note that UNCP Panhellenic does not have a formalized spring recruitment. If you are unable to participate in fall formal recruitment, but are interested in joining a sorority, you may participate in Continuous Open Bidding (COB). COB begins immediately following the end of the formal recruitment process and is a process by which organizations may extend bids to women outside of the formal setting. COB may also be held in the spring semester.
Is registration necessary to participate in Primary Recruitment? Yes, registration is required. Panhellenic collects the information provided during registration for our chapters and for you to receive a schedule
Am I obligated to join a sorority if I go through the full recruitment process? No, primary recruitment is an opportunity to explore Panhellenic Sorority Life! If you decide it is not right for you, you may withdraw from the process at any time.
What are the Academic Standards? Academics are extremely important to the Greek Community. It is important to understand the role academic marks play in the recruitment process. Sororities perform well at UNCP as shown by the all-sorority GPA average of 3.14. Members must put their school work first.
Can I live off campus during the week of recruitment? The majority of participants will have UNCP housing and dining contracts and live on campus. Though taking part in recruitment while living off campus is not a major challenge, it is important to note there are increased expectations of personal responsibility
Will I be Hazed? Hazing is absolutely forbidden. You don't have to prove anything to others. Each organization does have expectations of membership though. during the time that you are considering joining a sorority, be sure to ask pointed questions about the expectations of new members. All UNCP student organizations, including Greek Organizations must follow the UNCP Alcohol and Drug Policy and Anti Hazing Policy
Is a Snap Bid the Same as a COB? No, snap bidding ends when bids are distributed on Bid day. Continuous Open Bidding (COB) begins as soon as Bid Day Ends. Further, Snap Bidding is ONLY allowed to those chapters that did NOT match to quota in the bid-matching process of Primary Recruitment. The Snap Bidding process takes places before bids are distributed on Bid Day and eligibility is limited to women, who participated in at least the first round of recruitment. Snap Bids are coordinated and extended through the College Panhellenic, prior to the distribution of bids and the start of Bid Day Activities
Can I go through Recruitment as an upperclassmen or transfer student? Yes, if you are a full-time student at UNCP who consistently lives and self-identifies as a woman and have not been initiated into an NPC sorority at UNCP or on another campus, you may participate in Fall Primary Recruitment.
Does Participation in Primary Recruitment guarantee a bid for membership? No, although majority of the women participating in Primary Recruitment are invited to join a chapter at the end of recruitment.
What is the MRABA? The Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) is a one year binding agreement signed by the potential new member when ranking chapters after the final round of preference events during the primary Recruitment process. Prior to signing the MRABA, PNMs have several options to consider and reflect on with regard to membership options.
A PNM may choose not to complete the MRABA, thereby withdrawing them from recruitment. If they choose this option, they are eligible to accept a bid for membership from any sorority participating in Continuous Open Bidding. A small number of sororities may be able to recruit a limited number of women through the COB process after primary recruitment if their chapter is below the campus total, however this is not guaranteed.
They may choose to list any sorority whose preference event they attended and from whom they are willing to accept an invitation to membership a bid. Please note that you should not rank any sorority on your MRABA that you were absolutely not willing to accept a bid for a membership. If you match with a sorority that you listed on your MRABA it is important to note that you are bound to that sorority for one calendar year regardless of whether you officially accept their invitation for a membership or not.
They may choose to limit their choices to one sorority whose preference round event they attended and are willing to accept an invitation to membership. You must understand that if you chose the single intentional preference that you are not guaranteed to receive a bid for membership. Only potential new members who maximize their options and list all the chapters that they attended during the preference round are guaranteed to receive a bid for membership during primary recruitment
What are the benefits of joining a sorority? When joining a sorority you are also joining the greek community. You will gain supportive friends, leadership opportunities, philanthropic projects, community service, career opportunities are just a few of the amazing benefits of joining a sorority
Does Greek Life take up a lot of time? Greek membership takes up as much time as you are willing to invest. You will have the choice as to what to participate in outside of mandatory chapter events. Greek women have perfected the art of time management between jobs, academics, and sorority life.
Can I join more than one sorority? No, but you can get to know most, if not all, organizations through the recruitment process, you can only accept one bid from an NPC organization.
What is the time commitment of being in a sorority? The most popular phrase you'll hear in relation to this question is "you get out of it what you put into it!" There are minimum requirements that are fairly common in all organizations (weekly chapter meetings, mandatory rituals, etc.) but otherwise the time commitment is dependent on what role you want to take in the organization. While each sorority's requirements differ, a general estimate is anywhere from 2 to 8 hours a week. Whether it be helping with a community service project, planning an event, or regular weekly meetings. members have learned to manage their time wisely. it is important to not that during the initial New Member Process more time will be required. at the same time, each chapter understands the importance of scholarship and will always encourage you to prioritize school first.
