The PUSH Program works with Boston Public School students of color who come from marginalized communities, including first-generation college and immigrant students. We found that many of our students from these communities lack resources and exposure for navigating life. We combat this by equipping them with a post-secondary plan, self-advocacy development, and life skills.
PUSH provides a holistic approach to learning, which prioritizes academics, social-emotional, professional exposure, economic development, and civic engagement.

March 2021 Georgetown Law class video clip: “I hate to say this. I end up having this angst every semester that a lot of my lower ones are Blacks. Happens almost every semester. And it’s like, oh, come on. You get some really good ones. But there are also usually some that are just plain at the bottom. It drives me crazy.” - Prof. Sandra Sellers to another Georgetown law professor David Batson
The Takeaway for Educators and the Educated
Whatever is coming next in public or institutional initiatives, one thing is clear. The pandemic era and its "unprecedented" exigencies showed the world clear evidence of the disproportionate mistreatment and stress placed on Black community members. With the transition out of a COVID-era emergency, the burden is on all of us to process and respond to the revelations we just witnessed. Firing the professor does not resolve the underlying issue she made visible. A Pedagogy of the Oppressed approach would say that an observable correlation between knowledge retention and race should be revelatory in showing what must change about the knowledge, not about the students. This is the crisis. How can we trust peer review and academic gatekeeping when these insights go unaddressed? Critical Race Theory and the historical study of racial injustice address this crisis directly--which is what makes them dangerous to legislators who prefer the immaturity of race neutrality. It is also what makes them more urgent to teach than ever. (A. Cooper, Sept. 2023)
