"The Committee To Expropriate, A Revenge Fantasy"

by Darrah Teitel

We need new stories, the ones about the generation who saw the problems, looked them square in the face,

harnessed what excited them and responded with courage and adaptability.

Rob Hopkins, quoted in Lucy Neal, Playing for Time: Making Art as if the World Mattered (London: Oberon Books, 2015), 288.

Darrah Teitel’s "The Committee to Expropriate, A Revenge Fantasy" examines a time in the future with effective climate action. In her story, the wealthy are expropriated from their homes in order to be transformed into  multi-family houses for those less fortunate. Our production team transformed this story into a radio play. The story shows the dialogue between a member of the expropriation committee and the person being expropriated. From this play their opinions and lifestyles are discovered.

Our production team made a podcast that further brought this story to life by creating an interview with the expropriation committee member and another woman being expropriated. From this we were able to expand upon the characters and the debate at hand about the perceived wrongdoing in the play.

In addition to the play and podcast, our group started a program aligned with the goal of redistribution for those in need. We set up a meal exchange program where people who have extra swipes and points can donate to people who need them. We hope people participate in this program and continue the spirit of giving back to those in need. Those who are interested can sign up for the program at this link.
