Our team was formed as part of the Society of American Military Engineers Student Mentoring Program. We worked with a mentor to find a real-world problem and come up with an innovative solution to solve it.
We soon landed on the topic of the Missouri River. All of our team members live in the Omaha Metro area, which is dependent on the Missouri River. The city of Omaha truly would not exist without the Missouri. However, Omaha and surrounding communities contribute to pollution in the river. We wanted to do our part to reduce pollution and preserve the river's benefits for future generations.
That's why we created the Missouri River Initiative. We want to inform and inspire you. We want to reach out and help you make a difference.
Our project won the Post-President's Award of Honor with the Student Mentoring Program. Thanks to the hard work of our team and the assistance of our mentors, we were able to create an excellent project.

We frequently met over Zoom.
Behind Our Process
Our team is especially unique in one way-- we are all teenagers. We had to work on this project on top of schoolwork and other responsibilites. Since our team is comprised of two different schools, communication was a challenge. We had Zoom meetings at least once a week for communication with mentors and the other school. Along with that, email also played a major role in our communication.
Our team worked hard on this project, and we appreciate the support of our teachers, mentors, and parents.
In an early meeting, our mentor, Dave Packard, took notes and explained how our process would look.
Our team met in person once to work on our PSA.
Our project was recognized by the Society of American Military Engineers with the Post President's Award.
